Aspen Medical

About Aspen Medical

For over 20 years, Aspen Medical has been providing healthcare solutions in some of the most remote, challenging and resource-constrained environments worldwide. It is the only private company in the world accredited by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an Emergency Medical Team (EMT) for global trauma surgical services and outbreak response.

Outside of conflict-zone operation, the company continues to support healthcare infrastructure development in nations such as the UAE, Fiji and Indonesia, where Aspen Medical maintains a commitment to transforming healthcare systems on a global scale.

Aspen Medical further provides support to the US warfighter, both deployed and at home, with vital mental health services through its team of psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers on the Defense Health Agency’s nationwide behavioral health program.

The Project

Aspen Medical was awarded the role of implementing partner to the US Defense Health Agency’s Casualty Care Assessment of Russo-Ukraine War contract as a firm-fixed price US DoD contract.

Under this award, Aspen Medical delivers a range of services to both US DoD and the Ukrainian MoD and MoH. These services include a comprehensive, mixed methods assessment of Ukrainian trauma and combat casualty care (TCCC) capabilities during the ongoing war.

In addition to the key research component, this award includes facilitating the engagement of US, EU, and Ukrainian leadership and subject matter experts through the execution of 13 technical symposia to facilitate lessons learned and identify areas for immediate improvement of TCCC in Ukraine through immediate policy and practice changes. Symposia have covered, but are not limited to, trauma registry development, blood product use, evacuation, rehabilitation, and brain health.

Critically, it is not only Ukraine that benefits from these symposia; as an example of immediate lessons learned being put into practice, the US military has already revised its Tactical Combat Casualty Care recommendations for tourniquet conversion and replacement.

Within six months of launch, the contract was expanded to include the delivery of ten American College of Surgeons Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET) courses, training 20 Ukrainian front-line Ministry of Defense trauma surgeons and Operating Room technicians per course.

In the execution of this contract, we have developed a key partnership with the First Medical Union (FMU) of Ukraine. Central to this effort is the integration within the Lviv FMU facilities of the Unbroken National Rehabilitation Center (UNRC) – the only NGO focused exclusively on the full suite of holistic rehabilitative services by addressing physical injury and associated psychological and psychosocial needs of patients. Working alongside Unbroken, we have secured private grants and facilitated pro-bono services that have enabled essential, US accredited, capacity building programs as well as vital equipment donations in the field of advanced medical simulation, prosthetics and healthcare leadership in rehabilitative care.
